Mentoring
Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar developed what has come to be called Iyengar yoga from a firm spiritual, philosophical and practical base. Iyengar yoga is a way of life, rather than a physical activity.
In my role as your mentor, I am here to guide you on your path to becoming a teacher. This guidance can take the form of attending my regular classes, participating in workshops, and engaging in one-on-one sessions. You'll also have the chance to collaborate with other teacher trainees, honing your skills and forming a tight-knit support network that will stay with you throughout your teacher training journey and into your life as a teacher
The Enrolment Process:
To embark on the path of becoming an Iyengar yoga teacher, several criteria must be met. Specifically, if you have diligently attended Iyengar yoga classes for at least three years and demonstrated proficiency in Level 1 āsanas, you are eligible to initiate your training. The journey to becoming a teacher primarily involves mentorship with an experienced instructor who has been endorsed as a mentor by Iyengar Yoga (UK). If you are keen on pursuing this path, please have a conversation with your regular class teacher. If your current teacher cannot serve as your mentor, they can help you connect with a suitable mentor who can guide you through the training process.
Training Expectations:
As a trainee, you will be expected to participate in regular classes with your mentor. Over time, you will progress to demonstrating and assisting during classes, completing various written assignments, and engaging in peer-group sessions. The mentorship period spans a minimum of three years, although it may extend beyond this duration. Throughout this period, trainees are required to master both the Level 1 and Level 2 syllabi, as it's essential to reach an advanced level of understanding before instructing the basics.
In Summary:
Upon fulfilling the prerequisites outlined above, which encompass three years of class attendance and at least three years of mentorship, candidates will have dedicated themselves to Iyengar yoga for a minimum of six years. This tenure allows them to qualify for the Level 1 teaching assessment. At this stage, candidates should have reached a high standard in their personal practice of the āsanas and gained a preliminary awareness of the nuances of Iyengar yoga and its underlying philosophy.
